Business IT services in San Clemente.

San Clemente is the last city in Orange County before Camp Pendleton and the San Diego County line, and its businesses sit in two quite different settings: a walkable historic downtown near the ocean, and employment areas inland along Avenida Pico and Avenida La Pata. The IT questions differ between them, so this guide is organized by where a business is located. One section applies to everyone: the city’s electricity comes from San Diego Gas & Electric, so fire-weather shutoff alerts and outage maps come from SDG&E.

Downtown, the Pier Bowl, and North Beach

The city’s General Plan Land Use Element calls the Del Mar and T-Zone area the historic core and “the City’s most diverse, pedestrian-oriented commercial district,” with retail, restaurants, offices, and homes mixed together in Spanish Colonial Revival buildings. The Pier Bowl and North Beach are separate focus areas in the same plan, closer still to the water. For a shop or restaurant in any of them, the things to check are:

• Where cable can go. Older buildings and shared walls limit new wiring. Reusing existing pathways, or surface-mounted cable channel painted to match, is often the practical answer.
• Guest Wi-Fi kept apart from payments. Card terminals and the point-of-sale system (the register software) belong on their own network segment, separate from customer Wi-Fi. The network segmentation guide explains how.
• Outdoor equipment near the ocean. Salt air corrodes ordinary housings. For cameras or access points on a patio, look for an enclosure rated NEMA 4X, a rating that adds corrosion protection to weather resistance.

Los Molinos and the business parks

Inland, the General Plan names the Rancho San Clemente and Talega business parks as focus areas and describes Rancho San Clemente as an office and industrial employment center. Los Molinos, off Avenida Pico, is a primarily industrial district that the plan envisions as a business incubator area building on “its industrial and surf heritage,” with vehicle and marine services alongside.

These buildings raise different questions from a storefront:

• Office and shop floor on one network. Shipping stations, label printers, and machine controllers should be separated from office computers so a problem on one side does not spread to the other.

Power: San Clemente is SDG&E territory

SDG&E serves San Diego and southern Orange counties, and city documents list it as the local electric utility. During high fire risk weather it may declare a Public Safety Power Shutoff, with notices starting about 48 hours ahead. What to check:

1. Look up the address on the CPUC fire-threat map, which shows the state’s higher risk (Tier 2) and extreme risk (Tier 3) areas.
2. Put the modem, router, and network switch on a battery backup (a UPS) so a brief outage does not take down phones and payments.
3. Do not count on a cellular backup line alone. AT&T, for example, notes that the wireless backup in its fiber plans does not work during a power loss.

Internet and city paperwork

City documents name Cox as the local cable operator. The cable network built by Cox now operates as Spectrum, after Charter completed its acquisition of Cox in August 2026. AT&T sells fiber address by address, and Verizon offers 5G and LTE business internet where signal allows. Availability varies by address, so check the FCC National Broadband Map before signing a lease.

The city requires a business license for anyone conducting or advertising business in San Clemente, including home-based and out-of-city businesses.
