Two things set Dana Point apart from the inland cities nearby. Much of its business activity happens within sight of the ocean, where salt air shortens the life of anything mounted outdoors. And its best-known commercial area, the harbor, is in the middle of a long rebuild. This guide starts with those two and leaves utilities and paperwork for the end.

What salt air does to outdoor equipment

Cameras, outdoor Wi-Fi access points, and equipment cabinets are sold with protection ratings, and the common ones measure different things:

The wording comes from the NEMA enclosure types guide, which also notes that the IP rating system does not require a corrosion test. In practice, for a patio, dock, or rooftop near the water:

• Choose Type 4X enclosures or a manufacturer’s stainless steel or marine-grade housing.
• Pay attention to the small parts. Mounting brackets, screws, and cable connectors sit in the same salt air as the housing. Use stainless hardware and weatherproof connector boots.

Doing business inside a construction zone

The harbor is owned by the County of Orange. Dana Point Harbor Partners holds a 66-year ground lease that began in October 2018 and describes a project of nearly $600 million: a rebuilt commercial core with about 120,000 square feet of shops and restaurants and a parking structure, reconstruction of the marina’s docks and slips, and two new hotels in place of the Dana Point Marina Inn. Permits are being issued by the county in phases.

For a harbor tenant, that points to a few sensible choices:

1. Keep systems portable. Cloud-based point-of-sale (register) software, cloud file storage, and laptops can move to a new unit with little disruption. A server in a back closet cannot.
2. Have a connection that does not depend on the building. A cellular business internet line keeps card payments running if construction cuts a cable. Verizon, for one, sells 5G and LTE business internet for primary or failover use where coverage allows.
3. Ask before drilling. Any new cable run or camera mount in a leased harbor space should be cleared with the landlord, since the wall may not be there in a few seasons.
4. Keep a written record of what is installed and the account number for each service.

The Lantern District and the resorts

Away from the harbor, the Lantern District along Pacific Coast Highway is the older town center, with streets named for colored ship lanterns. The city describes its economy in terms of a “vibrant hospitality industry” along with restaurants and shops, and the Monarch Beach area holds two large resorts, the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach and the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel.

• Electricity comes from San Diego Gas & Electric, according to the city’s utilities page. SDG&E can shut off power during high fire risk weather, so sign up for its shutoff notifications.
• Wired internet. The same city page lists AT&T and Cox as the local telephone companies. The cable network built by Cox now operates as Spectrum, after Charter completed its acquisition of Cox in August 2026. Availability varies by address, and the FCC National Broadband Map shows what each provider reports for a given location.
• Licensing. Dana Point does not require a city business license. Registration is voluntary and free.
