California's Oldest Street
Two centuries of footsteps.
Los Rios Street has been the residential heart of San Juan Capistrano since 1794. Adobe walls, wood-clapboard cottages, and dirt sidewalks worn shallow by generations. Three of the houses on the block are nationally registered historic homes.
"It's the kind of street where the sidewalk is older than the buildings on either side of it."
Walking from the depot.
The San Juan Capistrano Amtrak and Metrolink depot is two minutes' walk away. Step off the train, cross at the gate, follow the dirt sidewalk past the cactus garden. The hand-routed wooden sign appears on your right.
"Ride down for the day, order a pour-over, sit on the porch with the next train coming through in forty minutes."
